Origins and history of the Puukko
The word puukko comes from Finnish and originally means “knife with a wooden handle”. Its shape has evolved very little over generations. Originally, it was the versatile tool of the Sami people, used for working wood, skinning game, and eating. Each inhabitant owned one, often handmade by a local craftsman, sometimes passed down from generation to generation.
The characteristics of the Puukko
The design of the Puukko is both simple and highly functional:A fixed blade, short (usually between 7 and 12 cm), with a straight edge, forged from carbon or stainless steel.A wooden handle, often made of curly birch or local wood, designed for a natural grip, without a guard between the blade and the handle.A leather sheath, hand-stitched, traditionally worn on the belt, always ready for use.The Puukko is not a show knife. It is designed to last, to be used, to age. It is an object of trust, stripped of all superfluous elements.
